I don't think there is anything wrong with you plan, specifically. I don't that I totally agree with your reasoning for your plan though
You're right i'm moreso after a monthly dividend distribution but it totally doesn't have to be REITs - I just know them for having an abundance of monthly distributors with a lower price per share, so if I start out with a chunk like this, the distributions could mean more significant share accumulation.
REITs pay out a lot because by law to avoid taxation (pass through structure) they need to distribute 90 percent of their net income to shareholders. This also means they tend to hold more debt and have low growth potential. One other challenge with public REITs is that they really only make up a small portion of the total stock market, so holding a ton of exposure in them means greatly emphasizing a small portion of the US market. Most real estate is privately owned so you aren't even getting complete exposure to that sector either, just whatever pool of properties arbitrarily decided to list on the exchange.
