Listen to Metallica, like all their albums. For me it was a fun adventure to find my favorite Metallica album and in the process I got to listen to almost all their albums. Try Megadeath, Slayer or Slipknot next. They got good songs and are not usually that extreme. If you’re into doom metal try Black Sabbath and Type o Negative and Electric Wizard. Not to forget Pantera (my favorite). I’m a super fan of their work specially Phil Anselmo and whatever the man makes I consume.
Metal is the only subgenre. Either you’re metal, or you’re not. If you have to add -core to the end of it, it’s not metal. If you have to put words like “nu” infront of it, it’s not metal, and your band is just a bunch of posers that wish they were metal. Let your music do the talking, and let your band name be its own “subgenre” of metal. ‘;..;’

I LOVE albums 3-7, but I haven't listened to the first 2 yet because i've heard that they're a lot heavier than everything after them and I'm just not a huge fan of that style of metal music.
I find that magic does not do good damage until you are in the high stats with it. My end game character for a mage usually has around 70-80. With the starscourge greatsword it would work if you did high in and split your points in red and strength. The ash of war is great for pulling people in for quick sword spells.
I personally play as a strength mage. I have a big sword in my right and a fun little shooty stick in my left. I obliterate them when they are far away and when they run at me I hit them even harder. I think it's a fun build.
