  1. My father busted his ass at a restaurant and my mom served dim sum and later worked as a grocery store cashier. I have no shame in telling their stories and expressing pride in their labor.

  2. So, I'm probably gonna get hit with the downvotes for this comment. Let me preface by saying that I don't agree with the restaurant owners and the arguments they make. But I strongly believe that the only people deciding whether a certain area is pedestrianized is the people living in that area. The North End situation is unique in that the wishes of the businesses and the residents are pretty opposite one another - the businesses want to get more $ by getting tables filled with customers onto the street, and the residents want that same space to park their cars.

  3. Most anti-car people would ask why you live in the North End and own a car.

  4. Bloomberg is reporting that a major trilateral deal that could end the war in Gaza, and return to the Abraham Accords, could be in sight. The proximity and high possibility of formal diplomatic relations between the Saudis and Israelis was one of the reasons suggested for Hamas's attack on 10/7. Excerpts:

  5. Do the Saudis even have much leverage over Hamas? Thought Iran was their main patron. It sounds more like we should be doing a deal with the Iranians instead but perhaps that sounds even more unpalatable to lawmakers than making a deal with the Saudis.

  6. Haiti's transitional council has selected a new prime minister (much to the consternation of some).

  7. Well getting rid of people can cut the costs.

  8. I don't know how you can cut labor at Starbucks because their drinks are somewhat labor intensive to make due to the combinations of syrups and such that can go into a drink. Every single person there is busy the vast majority of the time.

  9. Yeah but you need to spend money on R&D and then manufacture the robots... the payback period is long on those.

  10. I sincerely hope so, but how did she get the guy posing as her father to go along with this nonsense? My concern is it's part of trafficking recruitment. Very, very creepy she claimed to be a trafficking victim herself, I don't think that was disclosed before.

  11. She was already a social worker with plenty of access to children without stable parental figures. If she wanted to groom kids, she has plenty of opportunity and access already.

  12. I suppose thats true but those kids knew her by her real identity. If you get coerced into sex work by another child it would be easier to feel like it was your own decision, and even if you did tell an adult the person you are telling on it's a real person.

  13. Such a convoluted way to groom a child though... by pretending to be another child in the flesh? It doesn't seem like she attempted to groom anyone while she was posing as a student per reports.

  14. KFC and Pizza Hut have a lot of competition. I know plenty of local fried chicken and pizza places. Only Taco Bell in my market doesn't really have an analogue at their price point.

  15. Controversial take, but I liked how he would sometimes do what he set out to do, even when it may not have been popular and people complained about it. One might think the alternative is better, when a mayor is so concerned about constituent votes that he/she has to cave at any sign of pressure. But then nothing ever gets done. Saw a lot of that under Marty, and a bit with the incumbent as well.

  16. Agree with your take on Wu. I understand she is still young, so she has a long career (and plenty of elections ahead of her) but I sometimes wished she would just do the right thing instead of talking about doing the right (although unpopular) thing.

  17. I was a child/teenager for a majority of his mayoralty. I met him only once, a few years before he passed away.

  18. I heard the protests at most schools (besides Columbia) have been peaceful.

  19. I lived in DC and met numerous lawyers while living there. I knew a few lawyers who attended Harvard, BU, and BC, but never ran into anyone from Suffolk.

  20. Those companies aren't predominantly selling drinks.

  21. Nah Dunkin tastes worse but the cheapest coffee is often the stuff you brew on your own. Cold brew is crazy easy to make and even with the increase in raw coffee costs, I'd say I spend about 25 cents to 30 cents a cup at home.

  22. Strangely enough I bought more Starbucks drinks in the past half year or so than I had in my life previously. I decided to sign back into my rewards account to get some stars. But still Starbucks is probably only getting $50 in revenue from me generally speaking - it's a nice treat once every couple of months but their drinks are quite expensive.

  23. I just wish the leadership would take one trip to efficient subway systems in Europe or Japan and see all the low hanging fruit they are missing. In Japan the platforms are so organized, the train stops, people off, people on, and the train is on it way due to how the platforms are laid out (and certainly some of it cultural).

  24. Europeans spent over $1 trillion on rail in the past 20 years. Meanwhile in the US we've only spent $120 billion in the last 50.

  25. Given that Eng is close to retirement, I would reserve judgment about his legacy and contributions to the MBTA only in a few years. It seems like he's only in it to right the ship given his age and long career.

  26. There is also the problem of "you broke it you bought it" mentality, if any project to bring stability and some semblance of normalcy to Haiti fails, many will view it as the sole fault of the country behind that project, not Haiti itself, or conditions the country couldn't deal with, and it becomes a political weapon and hot potato.

  27. Biden did not want to deal with Haiti, he tried to push it onto the Canadians to lead a mission but then they refused. The Kenyans are willing to lead a mission but want to be paid for it and of course the US is perpetually footing the bill for a nation in its neighborhood.

  28. No, so that they could get a short-term burst to develop their infrastructure, such as what's happening in Guyana right now.

  29. Chopped cheese is super easy to make. Literally takes maybe 20 minutes of prep, 15 minutes of cooking.

  30. What grounds do you have for prioritizing people in worse situations over others, and prioritizing that over our own concerns? We’re a nation, not a charity. Charity can’t be outsourced to big government or corporations. If you think so, show me where it worked.

  31. You can argue the same about why this government has spent $60 billion on weapons for Ukraine (a country that wasn’t much of an ally until recently) instead of providing its citizens with free college educations and allowed Ukrainians to emigrate to this country without conditions and even work.

  32. Okay. Let’s argue that. At least we’ve recognized that race isn’t the factor.

  33. Haitians deserve our help just as much as Ukrainians do because of their country-specific circumstances. You got people cheerleading aid to Ukraine while telling Haitians to fix their own country. That’s like telling Ukrainians to fight their own war.

  34. 20k Yemeni civilians killed by Saudi bombing campaign.

  35. Brown people killing other brown people don't count. Unfortunately, even though a lot of Israelis are brown, most progressives only meet Jews in America, who are largely White or White-passing.

  36. From what I understand the whole point of the encampment is to shut down public spaces in order to punish the administration/force them to negotiate. Like, the protestors themselves don't view the encampment as a mere act of speech, so why should we?

  37. In the case of Tufts, Tufts should offer a space outside of the academic quad for protesters to continue their protest until the end of the semester. I understand the full quad is needed for commencement. If protesters are refusing offers to negotiate, then that's on them.

  38. We need some socialized housing. Enough of just zoning reform alone as suggested by YIMBYs. We need zoning reform and socialized housing at the same time.

  39. People have been doing this for a long time but because of technology much of this price fixing has been automated.

  40. The decision for the council's mandate to last until February 2026 seems questionable, in that it is a long time to go with unelected governance, and that it seems to assume they won't be able to stabilize the situation anytime soon. It would seem to me that a shorter deadline, even if they have to miss it and postpone would at least signal they intend to get things under control.

  41. The transitional council's purpose is to have a credible Haitian government (Ariel Henry had lost his credibility) who would presumably request help for an outside security mission to come in, stabilize the country, and make it safe for elections. It will take time but I don't think that things will necessarily get worse so long as the Haitian security forces do not collapse like all the other government institutions have.

  42. I had a long message ready to go that much of what you say has changed... hasn't, but really, this isn't the sub for that, and I suspect we'd disagree rather strongly about whether some of those changes were even beneficial. I was speaking generally, yes, but specifically in regards to protest to affect foreign policy, it has never once led to significant change.

  43. I remember this during the occupy protests, literally running between two jobs to pay the bills, and being fucking furious that people thought sitting around in tents would cause a sea change. College students are such a huge demographic, why such disappointingly ineffectual forms of protest?

  44. It's because college students are still supported by their parents and don't have any real responsibilities besides school. Depending on the major, most college students spend as little as 10 hours a week on schoolwork. I studied something easy in college and I spent a lot of my time playing video games.

  45. I imagine the planes won’t stay overnight right? I can’t imagine how scary that’d be to be an FA/Pilot stuck there. I’d rather be in Caracas than Port-Au-Prince

  46. Based on the schedule I'm seeing online from shopping for tickets, it seems like there's going to be one flight in and one flight out each day and only during the morning. My guess is that it's one plane serving that route only with a quick one hour turnaround.

  47. The city itself is not safe... but the government still controls the airport. So flying there is probably safe, but being in the capital itself is not. Once you leave the airport it's going to get sketchy as hell.

  48. Well, yeah - if no one else was replacing them, rents would fall. Rents are that high because other people have jobs in Boston paying them enough to pay the rents.

  49. Yep... at the expense of a labor shortage in the service industries, various government jobs, the things that keep a city running, you know?

  50. Oh yeah. Was just adding a bit of color to the commentary.

  51. Yeah, because he'd be killed by an Israeli airstrike or shot dead by an Israeli soldier while getting water. Queer people exist in Palestine. Their danger is dying at the hands of Israel, with American weapons.

  52. Gay people are not welcome in Gaza, much less lesbians or transgender people:

  53. Most leftists who take a very pro-Palestinian bent are not planning to live in or visit these places and would welcome the "natives" for enforcing their own cultural norms in these places.

  54. On one hand, this is good but on the other hand, Boston isn't building much more housing and there isn't much more room for people to continually add jobs here.

  55. They are very important to read because 1) they follow the company closely and 2) their calls absolutely affect the market sentiment.

  56. In general this is true. But there have been times in the past where equity analysts have missed the mark greatly.

  57. Putin can easily intervene to cut the rate but at the risk of stoking inflation.
